Luftbild Ostseefjord Schlei, Stadt Arnis - kleinste Stadt Deutschlands - Perle an der Schlei | Gründung und frühe Geschichte - Arnis wurde 1667 von 64 bis 65 Schifferfamilien aus dem benachbarten Kappeln gegründet. Diese weigerten sich, dem Gutsherrn Detlef von Rumohr Treue zu schwören und in die Leibeigenschaft zu geraten. Stattdessen wandten sie sich an Herzog Christian Albrecht von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, der ihnen die damals unbewohnte Insel Arnis zur Besiedlung überließ. Die Siedlung wurde nach einem festen Plan angelegt, mit klar definierten Parzellen und einer zentralen Kirche.
